GEOGRAPHY

Georgia is an ancient country, located in the Caucasus at the crossroads of Asia and Europe(formerly known as silk  road). It is bounded on the north and northeast by Russia, on the east and southeast by Azerbaijan, on the south by Armenia and Turkey, and on the west by the Black Sea.

LANGUAGE AND ALPHABET

Sakartvelo is what we call our country. People who are living here are called kartveli. Georgians have their own language which is  – kartuli and their alphabet as well, which is completely different from any alphabet. Moreover, they have three types of alphabet: Asomtavruli, Nuskhakhutsuri, and Mkhedruli.Mkhedruli is what Georgians use today and has 33 letters. You will see those letters everywhere in this country, but the old transcripts can be  see in churches.The script doesn’t have capital letters and the language itself is spoken only by 4m people as a first or second language.

RELIGION

Majority of the population is Christian orthodox. The history of religion in this country is huge, Georgians  have been invaded many times due to religion, but every time they survive and nowadays more than 80% of the population is Christian. Despite that, the country is very tolerant of other religions and is one of the few countries where orthodox and catholic churches, synagogues and mosques are built side by side.

WINE

Georgia is the cradle of wine, which means this is the oldest country where people cultivated grapes and made wine.  They have their own tradition of winemaking which is called Qvevri. The Qvevri is an egg-shaped earthenware vessel used for making, ageing and storing the wine.Georgia stands out from the rest of the world because of how the country retains its ancient and traditional methods of wine making.

HIGHEST SETTLEMENTS

The villages of Bochorna and Ushguli, at an altitude of 2,345m (7,694ft) and 2,100m (6,890ft) above sea level respectively, are some of the highest permanent settlements in Europe. Ushguli is recognized as the Upper Svaneti UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have not been in Svaneti, it means you have not seen Georgia.

GASTRONOMY

The cuisine of Georgia is as colorful as the country itself, each region has its own traditional dish, which expresses that place perfectly. Doesn’t matter what your taste is, you will always find your favorite dish here, whether you are a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian. Traditional Georgian feast is called “Supra”.
