Vashlovani Reserve was established in 1935, and since 2003 the unified complex of the reserve, national park and natural monuments has been united in the Vashlovani Protected Areas. Vashlovani Protected Areas are located in the extreme south-eastern part of Georgia, in Kakheti, on the Iori plateau, at an altitude of 100-900 m above sea level and its total area is 35,292 ha. It includes Vashlovani State Reserve, Vashlovani National Park and the following natural monuments: Eagle Gorge, Alazani Swamp (“Walnut Bay”) and Takhti-Tefa mud volcanoes. Vashlovani’s name, according to legend, is related to the resemblance of the light forest apple tree common here to the apple orchards. 

The network of tourist routes of Vashlovani Protected Areas offers a wide choice of single and multi-day hikes.There are 7 tourist trails at Vashlovani National Park.
